SOCIAL MEDIA POLICY

I’m glad you stopped by this page and hope you’ll find something helpful while you traverse the treacherous cyber-landscape known as “social media.”  This page applies to my other presence on the internet whether that be Twitter, TumblrInstagram, Facebook, e-mail, et al.

It would be remiss of me to not explain how much I appreciate all of my followers. Some of you (whom I will keep anonymous) follow a handful of people, are fortunate to have hundreds of thousands of followers, yet you’ve chosen to follow me. To say that I’m not a little flattered is a vast understatement! I can only hope that you find the information I share online to be of some value to you. The vast majority of my followers may only have a few dozen to a few hundred followers. Rest assured that every tweet, post, photo, etc. that I post is done with the thought in my mind, “Is this of value to the greatest numbers of people who follow me?”

I never follow someone with the expectation that they will follow me back. This is outlined in my main Social Media Policy page which also includes an important essay on why I do not argue on the internet. As for trolls, I never feed those that thrive in the wanton, visceral underbelly of the online world. Social media has changed a great deal in recent years and, according to some surveys, not for the better. There are countless other online essays regarding social media etiquette & demeanor, but it’s important to remember that we’re all branding ourselves just as a company builds & promotes a brand of automobile, food, electronics, repair service, consulting, et al. This doesn’t mean that we have to forgo our individuality and become a conformist robot or an obnoxious shill. It does mean that we have to share information that’s seen as useful, entertaining, personable, engaging, and (when possible) upbeat. True, we can’t all be cheerful every day and every hour, but posting or tweeting with a smile is often worth its weight in gold. As for me, I’m certainly no “social media guru, ” have learned much by trial and error, and consider my own social media presence to be a constant work-in-progress. After being on Twitter since March 2009, I’ve realized there’s a great deal of wisdom to be learned by observing the online behavior of many folks who are exceptionally successful with social media and I gladly I follow many of them.

In closing, I’m fully aware that my own online presence requires a great deal of work. We’ve all a great deal to learn and should never consider our “social media education” to be complete. We are all human, and to be human is to err.
